Introduction
The MP9 is a sub machine gun of Swiss origin. It is an updated version of the Austrian Steyr TMP and was introduced by Brugger + Thomet in 2004. The name MP9 stands for Machine Pistol 9mm. Depending on the exact definition used it can be classified as either machine pistol or sub machine gun.
Design
The MP9 is internally completely similar to the TMP, except for the new trigger safety. It is a blowback operated weapon that is a bit larger than a full size pistol. A dual stage trigger acts as fire selector. Externally the MP9 differs from the TMP in having Picatinny accessory rails and a side folding stock.
Firepower
The MP9 fires the 9x19mm round from a 15, 20, 25 or 30 round magazine. It is a select-fire weapon with a cyclic rate of fire of 900 to 1.000 rpm. Despite its high rate of fire it reportedly remains controllable, even with bursts of up to 10 rounds. The TP9 is a semi-automatic variant. A silencer can be fitted.
Users
The MP9 has been adopted by several law enforcement and military units. It has proved to be more successful than the TMP, possibly due to the folding stock and accessory rails.
